Food Box Programs

The Yasuke Commons and Commons is a women-owned and BIPOC-led company aimed at repairing the damage of systemic racism through healing and equity. Our food equity programs help families and individuals implement healthy practices and provide access to locally grown organic food. Every Wellbeing Box purchased will help fund the build-out of our Nourish Kitchen. In addition to supporting our initiative, the Nourish Kitchen will be a healing space that hosts classes, workshops, community events, one-on-one nutritional counseling, and health coaching.

Our goal this year is to sell 2,000 Wellbeing Boxes to fund this meaningful work.

The Equity Food Box Program

This program uses a co-op model that centers on equity by offering a one level membership to all. This means all members receive the same benefits and have access to the same foods and services regardless of their ability to pay. Membership in the program is offered on a sliding scale. So those who can afford to pay do, and those who cannot are eligible to participate for free. Each week, members receive a box filled with healthy groceries from local artisans, and produce that are grown on our farm, and other BIPOC farmers in our community. The boxes contain nutrient-dense, culturally relevant, and local organic produce. Vegetarian, plant-based, and protein options are also available.

All members of the Food Equity Box are eligible to participate in our Nutritional Wellness Program, Health Coaching Service, personal Well Care plan and other offerings at no additional charge.

How it Works

  • 1Individuals or families sign-up for the program.
  • 2A community health worker or nutritional counselor contacts the new member to conduct an intake assessment.
  • 3A customized meal plan is created based on specific dietary needs, personal preferences and cultural considerations.
  • 4Weekly boxes are distributed to local pick-up sites throughout the region, or may be delivered directly to clients for a fee. Boxes are delivered directly to elderly and disabled members at no charge.
  • 5Members are eligible to participate in our Nutritional Wellness Program and Health Coaching Services, in addition to our classes, workshops and support groups.r

Individuals or businesses that would like to support this program financially can sponsor a membership or simply donate a membership to our scholarship funds.

Holiday Food Box & Meal Program

Our program offers all the ingredients needed to prepare a home-cooked holiday meal, including vegetarian options for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Anyone who receives food from Yasuke Commons through any of our equity programs or who is referred to us from partner organizations is entitled to receive a box. We also provide prepared holiday meals for the houseless.

Our Christmas food boxes include toys for families with children.

How It Works

  • 1This program is open to anyone who receives food from us (low – no income) as well as others who are referred to us through our partner organizations.
  • 2Boxes contain the ingredients needed to prepare a holiday meal. For Thanksgiving, the box includes meat or a vegan protein, salad, stuffing, pie, veggie, dinner roll, corn bread, fresh & dried herbs and apple cider. For Christmas, the box contains the same dinner food (eggnog is substituted for apple cider) as well as ingredients for breakfast: eggs; bacon; pancakes; and fruit).
  • 3Our team of volunteers, chefs, and other professionals help us prepare meals for houseless communities who will receive a complete holiday meal including a piece of pie!
  • 4Meals are delivered to people one to two days prior to the holiday.
  • 5Boxes are distributed for pickup at designated sites throughout Washington, Multnomah (including East Multnomah) Counties.
  • 6Funding for the program is paid for through private donations, sponsorships and fundraising. Toys for the children are donated from area businesses and partner agencies.
